Campbell pulls out of Australian Open with injury

SYDNEY: Former US Open champion Michael Campbell has withdrawn from this week’s Australian Open golf at Royal Sydney with a shoulder injury, organisers said Sunday. The 2005 US Open champion pulled out of the Australian Masters a week ago after he withdrew from the first round of the Hong Kong Open last month. “The scans I had last week on my shoulder have confirmed a small tear to the rotator cuff,” the New Zealander said in a statement. “While it feels better than it did two weeks ago, rather than risk aggravating the injury, the best thing for me to do is to rest and continue the physio treatment so I can be sure of being 100 percent for the start of the 2009 season.” The Australian Open is the final event on the year’s Australasian PGA Tour where the Order of Merit champion will be crowned. afp
